✨ Free Things I Do Instead of Spending Money
After I started cutting back on my spending (you can read about the things I stopped buying [here]), I realized that saving money didn’t have to feel boring or restrictive. In fact, I found that there are plenty of fun, fulfilling things to do — that cost absolutely nothing.
Here are a few things I now do for free instead of spending money out of habit.
1. 🚶♀️ Taking Long Walks in Nature
Instead of grabbing coffee or heading to a store just to kill time, I now go for long walks in a local park or trail. It clears my head, lifts my mood, and gives me a much-needed break from screens — all for free.
2. 📚 Borrowing Books Instead of Buying Them
I used to buy every book I wanted to read. Now, I borrow eBooks and audiobooks for free using apps like Libby and Hoopla, which connect to local libraries in the U.S. It feels just as satisfying as shopping — without the credit card swipe.
3. 🎧 Listening to Podcasts and Free Courses
Whenever I’m tempted to buy a new online course or subscription, I check Spotify or YouTube first. From personal growth to health, there are podcasts and free classes on nearly every topic you can imagine.
4. 🏡 Rearranging or Refreshing My Space
Instead of buying new décor or organizing bins, I just rearrange what I already own. Moving furniture or swapping wall art between rooms makes my home feel brand new — without spending a dime.
5. ✍️ Journaling or Brain Dumping
On days when I feel restless or stressed (aka when I would’ve gone shopping to feel better), I grab a notebook and just write. It’s surprisingly helpful. Sometimes, all I need is to clear my mind — not my bank account.
6. 🍳 Trying “Pantry Challenge” Recipes
Instead of ordering food when I don’t know what to cook, I challenge myself to use what’s already in my pantry. It turns dinner into a creative little game — and I waste less food too.
7. 📷 Exploring My City Like a Tourist
There are so many free events and places to explore nearby that I used to overlook. Museums with free entry days, local farmers markets, art walks, even hiking trails — exploring my city without spending has been eye-opening.
💬 The Best Things in Life Really Can Be Free
I used to think spending money was the only way to enjoy myself. But cutting back forced me to get creative — and I ended up finding more peace, joy, and fulfillment than I ever expected. Not only is my budget healthier, but I feel more in control of my time too.
