The Invisible Nani and the Vanishing Biryani

The Invisible Nani and the Vanishing Biryani

It all started on a peaceful Sunday afternoon. The kind where your biggest goal is to find the TV remote and pretend you're not ignoring a pile of laundry staring at you like a disappointed mother-in-law.

I was alone at home—or so I thought.

I had just made a plate of hot biryani, full of flavor, spice, and the exact level of drama I like in food. I placed it on the table, went to grab a spoon, and came back to an empty plate.

Not half-eaten.
Not stolen by a sibling.
Empty. Sparkling. Clean.

Either I had gone into a blackout and eaten it in one bite (which is always possible), or something fishy was going on—besides the smell of fried onions in the air.

I checked under the table.
I checked the neighbor’s dog through the window.
I even checked my own reflection.
Nothing.

And just as I turned around to check the plate again, I heard the faintest sound:
"Beta, thori si mirch kam daalti, lekin swad zabardast tha."

I froze. That voice… was unmistakable.

It was Nani. My grandmother.
Except she passed away six years ago.

I gulped.
Either I had officially lost it…
Or… Nani had become a biryani-loving ghost who visits once a year to critique my cooking.

Naturally, I did what any mature adult would do in this situation.
I screamed, grabbed the remote, and hid under my blanket.
Because clearly, ghosts respect the power of a good blanket.

The next morning, I woke up to find a note on the fridge, written in shaky Urdu:

"Biryani achi thi. Agli dafa raita bhi bana lena. – Nani 👻"

Since that day, I've made it a tradition.
Every Sunday, I cook biryani and leave a little plate out.
Sometimes the plate is still full.
Sometimes it's gone.
And once, she left a recipe upgrade. (Ghosts with taste!)

Moral of the Story?
You may lose loved ones…
But you’ll never lose their judgment on your cooking.

Also:
If your food disappears mysteriously, don’t blame the cat.
Blame the invisible Nani.
