🛑 What I Stopped Buying to Save $500 a Month

🛑 What I Stopped Buying to Save $500 a Month

Sometimes, saving money isn’t about making more — it’s about spending a little less. I never realized how much small purchases were costing me until I tracked my monthly expenses. After making just a few smart changes, I started saving nearly $500 every month. Here’s exactly what I gave up to make that happen.

1. ☕ Cutting Back on Daily Coffee ($90/month)

I had a habit of stopping by Starbucks or a local café every morning, spending anywhere between $4 and $6. Over a month, it added up to around $90–$120. Now, I make my own coffee at home with a French press and a splash of my favorite creamer. It’s just as satisfying — and way cheaper.

2. 🍔 Ordering Less Takeout ($150/month)

Food delivery apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash were way too convenient — and expensive. I was easily spending $30–40 a week, which added up quickly. I’ve now switched to simple meal prepping on Sundays, and I limit takeout to just a few times a month. Big savings, healthier meals.

3. 👗 No More Impulse Clothing Purchases ($80/month)

Online sales used to tempt me all the time. I'd buy things during “limited-time offers” and forget about them days later. Now, I follow a 30-day rule: if I still want it after a month, I’ll buy it. Usually, I don’t.

4. 📺 Canceling Extra Streaming Subscriptions ($50/month)

At one point, I was paying for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, and Spotify Premium. I realized I was barely watching anything on half of them. So now, I only keep one subscription active per month and rotate them. I also switched Spotify to the free version. That alone saves me about $50 monthly.

5. 🛍️ Avoiding Random Target and Amazon Buys ($70/month)

Amazon and Target were my weakness. I’d go in for one item and come out with five. Now I keep a running list of what I actually need and stick to it. I also use the “Save for Later” button for online shopping, and 90% of the time, I forget about those items entirely.

6. 💅 Stopped Stockpiling Beauty Products ($40/month)

I used to buy way too many skincare and makeup products — half of which I never used. Now, I don’t replace anything until I’ve finished what I already have. My bathroom looks cleaner, and so does my spending.

🧠 Final Thoughts

None of these changes felt drastic, but the impact on my savings was real. I still enjoy life, but I’ve learned to be more intentional with where my money goes. If you’re struggling to save, start by tracking your spending for a week. You might be surprised where your money disappears.
